Chemicals In Cosmetics Are An Everyday Health Danger For Teens

A very scary study has been done by the Environmental Working Group where 20 girls betwen the ages of 14 to 19 were tested and 16 different types of chemicals were found through blook and urine testing.  The 16 chemicals come from  phthalates, triclosan, parabens, and musks which are largely found in cosmetics. There are many health risks of these chemicals, including cancer. The two parabens ( chemicals found in cosmetics as preservatives) are methylparaben and propylparaben and when tested, all of the girls had them in their bodies.
Cosmetics are usually a part of a women's daily life that starts during the teenage years..  So women are exposed to the dangerous chemicals everday. The twenty teenagers that were being tested used an avarage of 17 products everyday. These girls are being exposed to chemicals unknowingly everyday and the government is not doing anything to protect them from it.  The chemicals used in cosmetic products are usually not tested, so there is no way of knowing the effects it has on people.

The EWA ( Environmental Working Group) recommends the following in order to decrease health dangers:

  • The federal government must set comprehensive safety standards for cosmetics and other personal care products.
  • Teens should make healthy choices for themselves by reducing the number of products they use, and by using EWA Shopper’s Guide to Safe Cosmetics to select safer products.
  • Companies must reformulate products to protect consumers from exposure to potentially toxic chemicals, untested ingredients, and noxious impurities.
