TerraCycle - Where Nothing Is Wasted

TerraCycle wasfounded by Tom Szaky and Jon Beyer, two Princeton Universitystudents, in 2001. They came up with the idea for a contest held in Princeton by the Princeton Entrepreneurship Club. Afterrealizing that they can do a lot of great by turning their project to reallife, they asked help of their university and eventually started their businessplan. The image behind their project was to help the environment through “taking less, processing it and turning it into a useful product”.

Terra Cycle’s goalis to not only minimize the amount of waste being produced, but to actuallyreverse the waste.  TerraCycle PlantFoods are made through worms that feed on organic waste and then liquefyingtheir poop and finally packaging the liquid in (reused) bottles.

Theidea that started in a dorm-room with two friends has gotten much deservedattention from both consumers and the media due to the service they provide as their company grew. AtTerra Cycle, you can find organic fertilizers, repellents, and composters foryour garden as well as bags and totes that are made purely from recycledmaterials. (One of my favorites is the capri-sun tote bag made from caprisunpouches).

Terra cycleproducts are found in many places and have become popular over the years. TerraCycle products can be found in The Home Depot, Whole Foods, Wal Mart ( Canada),Wild Oats and Do-It-Best.  They have beenon the 100 innovative companies in the Red Herring Magazine and have gotten anaward ( the environmental stewardship award) from Home Depot in Canada.
